Forget Superman, Spider-man and Batman. There is a comic book hero in town. One who attempted to change the world without super-hero powers. A mysterious vigilante known as “V.”
Created by Allan Moore and illustrated mostly by David Lloyd, the 10-issue graphic novel titled V for Vendetta is set in a near-future Britain in which Norsefire, a fascist party, has taken over. “V” plans a way to overthrow the government. Codename V is said to have adopted his name, “V,” from Roman numeral for the number five, which was the room number he was held in during the experiment he escaped from.
The skilled character “V” keeps his identity secret by wearing a Guy Fawkes mask and a shoulder-length wig. The costume pieces are also known as a V for Vendetta mask and
V for Vendetta wig.
In the story, once “V” is unable to complete his elaborate plan, his successor Evey wears the Guy Fawkes mask to appear to be him and complete his mission. The comics have since been made in to a movie of the same title and had cultural impacts.
In 2008, protesters against Scientology in London wore the
V for Vendetta masks as their symbol. The
Guy Fawkes masks, which are named after the historical British revolutionary, can also be worn during the Bonfire Day celebrated in the United Kingdom to commemorate Guy Fawkes with fireworks and bonfires.
